A three-layer mat: a soft core between two harder skins. A blade parts the core and the core closes behind it, so the surface stays flat rather than collecting the track of every cut you have ever made. A cheap single-layer mat does not do this - it takes a permanent groove, and the next time you cut near that groove the blade falls into it and your line goes with it.
Three millimetres is the thickness worth having. Thinner mats telegraph every crumb underneath them and curl at the corners within a year.
Gridded at 10 mm with 45 and 60 degree guides. The grid is printed under the top skin so it cannot be cut away, which is where printed-on-top grids go within a month.

- Fits
- A3 working surface. Suits whatever cutter you already own, including a rotary cutter. Lies flat on any bench 300 mm deep or more; will overhang a narrower desk and should be supported if it does.
- Service life
- Three to six years of regular use before the healing slows and cuts start to stay open. The check is a fresh cut in a corner: if it closes to a faint line within a minute, the core is still working, and if it stays as an open slot the mat is finished. A finished mat is still a usable work surface - it just is not a cutting one.
- Composition
- Three-layer PVC: a soft self-healing core between two harder skins, grid printed under the top skin. Both faces usable; grid on one side only.

Fitting & care
- Keep it flat and out of sun. A mat stored rolled or leaning takes a curl it will not lose, and UV hardens the core.
- Wipe with a damp cloth only. Solvent softens the top skin and it will never be flat again.
- Rotate it end for end every few months so the wear is spread instead of concentrated where you always cut.
- Never put a hot iron, a soldering iron or a heat gun near it.
Cautions
- Not heat resistant in any way. Heat gouges the surface permanently and there is no recovering it.
- Not for hammering, punching or riveting - impact crushes the core flat and it does not spring back.
- Not for use as a glue mat. Cement welds itself to the top skin and taking it off takes the skin with it.
- Not to be washed in hot water; above about 40 degrees Celsius the layers begin to separate at the edges.
