Six half-sheets at 600, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit, coated on polyester film rather than on paper. The backing is the whole reason to buy film instead of wet-and-dry: paper softens as soon as it is wet, tears at a corner, and loses its flatness within a few minutes, and film does none of those things.

The grade also stays honest. A paper sheet wears down through its own grades as you use it, so the last third of a 1200 sheet is behaving like a 2000 without telling you. Film holds its grade until the grain is spent, which means the finish you get on the second panel is the same as the first.

Six grades sounds like a lot until you sand a canopy. Skipping a grade is the reason a clear part comes out cloudy - each grade only removes the previous one's scratches, and 600 to 1500 in one jump leaves marks nothing later can reach.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Fits
Wet or dry on styrene, ABS, resin, clear acrylic parts, cured filler and primer. Cuts to size with scissors and takes a light spray adhesive if you want it on a block.
Service life
A sheet lasts three to six sessions of canopy or panel work used wet, and roughly half that used dry. The check is a rinse: if a rinsed sheet still looks glazed and grey rather than showing its grain, the grain is spent and the sheet will only burnish from now on.
Composition
Graded aluminium oxide on 75-micron polyester film with a resin bond. Grades 600, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 3000, one sheet of each.
Dimensions
140 x 100 mm per sheet, 0.09 mm total thickness
Weight
3 g per sheet; 18 g for the set of six
Made
Coated and graded in Japan on polyester backing, then sheeted and packed in Georgia.

Fitting & care

  • Work wet on anything you want flat. Water floats the swarf out of the grade instead of letting it plough.
  • Back the sheet with something rigid for a flat surface and with something soft for a curved one - the backing decides the shape, not the sheet.
  • Rinse and hang to dry rather than stacking damp sheets; the coating is fine, the backing just curls.
  • Move up in grade one step at a time. Skipping a grade leaves scratches the next one cannot reach.

Cautions

  • Not for use on a bare edge you want to keep sharp. Abrasive rounds an edge; that is what it does.
  • Not a substitute for filling. Sanding a gap only widens the area around it.
  • Do not use with heat or on a powered pad. The polyester backing softens and the grade releases in patches.
