Three turned beech handles with brass ferrules, bored 3 mm to take a needle-file tang. They are not a luxury: a file gripped by its bare tang is uncomfortable within a minute, and an uncomfortable grip is why people start dragging the file on the return stroke, which rounds the teeth over and finishes the file early.

Three rather than six, because most people work with two or three shapes at a time and swapping a handle takes a second. If you would rather have one per file, order two sets.

The beech is left unlacquered. A lacquered handle looks better in a photograph and slips the moment your hands are warm; bare beech takes on a slight polish where you hold it and grips better as it ages.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Fits
Bored 3 mm by 30 mm deep - takes the plain 3 mm tangs on the AB-01 needle file set and any standard needle file of the same tang size. Does NOT fit tapered engineer's-file tangs, which are square and much larger.
Service life
Indefinite. The failure mode is the ferrule working loose, which happens when a file is driven in with a hammer rather than pressed. If a ferrule spins on the wood, stop using it - the wood will split at the bore next.
Composition
Steamed European beech, turned and sanded to 320 grit, unlacquered. Drawn brass ferrule, 9 mm, pressed and pinned.
Dimensions
78 mm long, 16 mm at the widest, 9 mm ferrule
Weight
14 g each; 42 g for the set of three
Made
Turned in Northern Italy from European beech, ferrules pressed and pinned in the same shop.

Fitting & care

  • Press the file tang in by hand with a twist, or tap the handle down onto the tang against the bench - never drive the tang in with a hammer.
  • Keep them dry. Beech moves with humidity and a handle stored damp will loosen its ferrule.
  • Leave them unfinished. Oil or lacquer both make the grip worse.

Cautions

  • Not for engineer's files, rasps or anything with a square tapered tang.
  • Not for use as a mallet or a burnisher; the ferrule is pressed, not welded.
  • Not for rotary tools of any kind.
