Four sticks at 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grit, each on a rigid polypropylene core. The core is the point: a sanding stick that flexes follows the shape it is given, which rounds every edge you were trying to keep, and a rigid one takes a surface flat.
Grit is stated as a number and it is the same standard on all four, so stepping up a grade actually removes the previous grade's scratches. Mixed-standard sets are the reason people sand for twenty minutes and still see tracks under primer.
They are double-sided and reversible, and they are consumable. Four sticks will not last a whole kit if the kit needs much seam work.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Fits
- Works on styrene, ABS, resin, cured filler and primer. Sized to reach inside a 12 mm intake or a wheel arch, which is the clearance most flat sanding blocks cannot make.
- Service life
- One to three kits depending on how much seam work each needs, and less on resin, which is far harder on grain than styrene. Replace a stick when the grain no longer bites under light pressure - a stick that needs pressure is polishing, not cutting, and polishing a seam just burnishes it so the flaw shows up under paint.
- Composition
- Aluminium oxide grain bonded to a cloth backing, laminated both faces onto a 3 mm glass-filled polypropylene core. Grades 400, 600, 800 and 1000, all to the same grading standard.
- Dimensions
- 140 x 12 x 3 mm each
- Weight
- 9 g each; 36 g for the set of four
- Made
- Grain coated in Japan, laminated and cut in Taiwan, packed in Georgia.
Fitting & care
- Use them wet on anything that will be painted. Wet sanding floats the swarf away and stops the grain clogging.
- Work in one direction rather than scrubbing back and forth; a single direction leaves scratches the next grade can find and remove.
- Rinse and stand them on end to dry rather than laying them on a wet bench, which lifts the laminate at the edges.
Cautions
- Not for bare metal or photo-etch. The grain is graded for plastic and rounds a brass edge quickly.
- Not for use on a curve you want to keep round - a rigid core flattens curves, which is exactly what it is for and exactly what you do not want there.
- Not to be used dry on filler. Filler dust loads the grain solid in seconds and the stick is then finished.
