Four sheets at 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000, which is the range that takes a sanded clear part from matte back to optical. It is a continuation of the AB-04 set rather than an alternative to it - starting here on a scratched canopy will take a very long time and will not get there.
The order matters more at these grades than at any coarser one. Each of these removes a scratch pattern roughly half as deep as the last, and jumping from 4000 to 12000 leaves a haze that reads as a cloudy part no matter how long you rub.
Used wet, with clean water and a rinse between grades. Any grain carried up from the previous sheet puts a single deep scratch across a part you had almost finished, and that is the most common way a canopy is lost at the last step.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Fits
- For clear styrene, acrylic and cured gloss surfaces that have already been taken to at least 3000 grit. Follows on directly from the AB-04 graded set.
- Service life
- Six to ten parts per sheet used wet. These grades wear by loading rather than by losing grain, so the check is whether a rinsed sheet still feels slightly toothy under a fingertip - once it feels like plain film, it is polishing nothing.
- Composition
- Graded aluminium oxide on 75-micron polyester film with a resin bond. Grades 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000, one sheet of each.
- Dimensions
- 140 x 100 mm per sheet, 0.09 mm total thickness
- Weight
- 3 g per sheet; 12 g for the set of four
- Made
- Coated and graded in Japan on polyester backing, then sheeted and packed in Georgia.
Fitting & care
- Work wet on anything you want flat. Water floats the swarf out of the grade instead of letting it plough.
- Back the sheet with something rigid for a flat surface and with something soft for a curved one - the backing decides the shape, not the sheet.
- Rinse and hang to dry rather than stacking damp sheets; the coating is fine, the backing just curls.
- Move up in grade one step at a time. Skipping a grade leaves scratches the next one cannot reach.
Cautions
- Not a starting grade. On a scratched or freshly sanded part these will take a very long time and never fully clear it - start at 600 with the AB-04 set.
- Not for bare edges or panel lines, which these will round and soften before you notice.
- Not to be used with any grit carried over from a coarser sheet. Rinse the part and your fingers between every grade.
- Not a replacement for a gloss coat. Polishing gets a part clear; it does not make it glossy the way a clear finish does.
