A stainless rule graduated every half millimetre, etched and filled rather than printed. Printed graduations wear off exactly where you use them most, which is the first 30 mm, and a rule you cannot read at the end you always use is worse than no rule.
The back carries a thin cork strip. It lifts the rule about half a millimetre off the surface, which does two things: it stops the rule sliding when you press on it, and it keeps the etched face from dragging ink or wet paint across the work.
One edge is square and unmarked so it can be used as a cutting edge. It is stainless and it will blunt a blade faster than a plastic straight edge would, which is the trade for an edge that stays straight.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Fits
- Graduated 0-150 mm in 0.5 mm increments along one edge, 0-6 inches in 32nds along the other. The unmarked long edge is square and intended as a straight edge for cutting.
- Service life
- Indefinite for the rule; the cork backing is the wear part and lasts two to four years before it starts shedding. The check is whether the rule still sits without rocking - a partly lifted cork strip makes the rule pivot and every line you draw against it comes out slightly off.
- Composition
- 0.8 mm hardened stainless steel, photo-etched graduations filled black, 2 mm self-adhesive cork strip on the reverse.
- Dimensions
- 165 x 25 x 0.8 mm, plus 2 mm of cork
- Weight
- 34 g
- Made
- Etched and filled in Northern Italy, cork backed and packed in Georgia.
Fitting & care
- Cut against the unmarked edge, never against the graduated one - a nick in the graduated edge loses you the reference.
- Wipe the etched face rather than scrubbing it; the fill is in the etch, and abrasive takes it out of the shallow marks first.
- Keep it flat. A stainless rule stored leaning in a jar takes a gentle bow that you will not see and will measure.
Cautions
- Not a cutting guide for a heavy blade or a snap-off knife under force - the rule is 0.8 mm and a blade can ride up over it.
- Not for use as a burnisher or a scraper; both mark the etched face.
- Not accurate against a heated surface. Stainless moves with temperature and this is a rule, not a standard.
