Dividers step a dimension off and mark it repeatably, which is how a spacing that has to be even ends up even rather than nearly even. Set them once against the rule and you can walk the same distance along a panel a dozen times without measuring again, and without the error creeping the way it does when you measure each one.
The adjustment is a knurled screw against a bow spring, not a friction joint. A friction divider drifts as it is used, so the twelfth mark is not the same as the first and you only find out at the end. A screw holds its setting until you change it.
The legs are hardened and the points are ground fine enough to mark styrene with almost no pressure. That matters more than it sounds: pressing a divider point into plastic raises a bump around the mark, and the bump is what shows through a finish later.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Fits
- Sets from 0 to 65 mm and holds the setting against the screw. Marks styrene, ABS, resin, brass and aluminium. Points are 0.3 mm at the tip, fine enough to sit inside a scribed panel line.
- Service life
- A long-life tool. The wear points are the tips: set the legs closed and hold them to a light, and the two points should meet with no daylight and no overlap. A point that has been dropped and bent can usually be dressed back on 2000 film once; twice and it will not sit true.
- Composition
- Hardened stainless steel legs with a bow spring, knurled brass adjusting screw, points ground and lapped.
- Dimensions
- 115 mm long, 65 mm maximum span
- Weight
- 46 g
- Made
- Forged, hardened and hand-fitted in Northern Italy; points lapped in the same shop.
Fitting & care
- Set the span against the rule, then check it before you step it off - a divider is repeatable rather than accurate, and it will repeat a wrong figure perfectly.
- Walk the dividers heel over point rather than dragging them, so each mark starts where the last one ended.
- Keep them dry and store them closed so the points are not exposed.
Cautions
- Not a compass for drawing. Both legs mark the surface, which is the whole idea and is not what you want on a face that will be seen.
- Not for scribing a line. Dividers mark points; a line between them is a separate operation with a straight edge.
- Not for use on a finished or painted surface - the points will go through a finish and the mark cannot be filled invisibly.
- Not to be used as an awl or a punch. Impact loads spread the spring and the setting stops holding.
